Upside Down (2012)

Love Prevails

A Review

Read Time: 1 min read

Rating: 3.5 out of 5.

Can love defy gravity? Apparently, it can—at least in this film.

Upside Down throws physics out the window and asks you to just roll with it, because logic is definitely not the priority here. The concept of two worlds separated by opposing gravity is never really explained (and probably shouldn’t be questioned too much), and the gunmen in this movie make Stormtroopers look like expert snipers. But honestly? You won’t even care, because the visuals are absolutely breathtaking, the trance-like soundtrack pulls you in, and the romance is so passionate you’ll forget to ask how any of this actually works.

The story takes a biblical spin with its star-crossed lovers, Adam and Eden (yes, really), living in twin worlds that can never mix. It’s a romance wrapped in sci-fi, with an artistic, dreamlike quality that makes it feel like you’re peering through a kaleidoscope while spinning in a gyroscope. The camera work alone will leave you dizzy—so be warned, you might just feel like flipping upside down yourself.

Is it scientifically sound? Nope. Does it matter? Not really. This is the kind of movie that thrives on spectacle rather than logic, and if you can embrace that, it’s an incredible visual experience. If nothing else, it’s worth watching for the sheer beauty of its world-building.

Side note: While looking up photos from the movie, I stumbled across another review calling this one of the worst movies of 2013. I mean… lol. Guess gravity isn’t the only thing divided when it comes to opinions on this film.
