Rating: 3 out of 5.Despite what the movie poster boldly claims, there were definitely a few warning signs before everything goes up in flames.
I’ll admit, I kept putting off watching Pompeii because I thought it was just another film about an island going down in a blaze of glory. Turns out, I was way off—this one actually tells the tragic story of the eruption of Mount Vesuvius and the fate of the ancient city of Pompeii. If you were expecting a super exaggerated disaster movie, though, think again—it’s more grounded than you might expect.

The cast does a pretty good job bringing this historical drama to life, especially the gladiators. But the main character, Milo, the “Celt” gladiator, could’ve used a bit more emotional depth. While he’s certainly a strong presence in the action scenes, I found myself wishing for a little more from his backstory and motivations. The supporting cast is where the movie shines, with some real character development that makes you care a bit more about their fates.

Now, the visuals in this film? Absolutely breathtaking. Whoever worked on the CGI for the eruption should be receiving some serious accolades because the scene looks like something straight out of a nightmare. You really feel the heat and intensity of the lava as it rains down on the city—it’s one of those moments where you’re practically holding your breath, waiting for the next disaster to strike.
The ending, however, is what really hits home. The reveal of the fossilized remains of Pompeii’s victims is a haunting but beautiful way to close the story. It’s a subtle but impactful reminder of the real tragedy behind the tale, and it left me with a sense of quiet reflection about how the people of Pompeii are still remembered through history.

As for the plot, it’s a fun mix of everything you’d expect: a love story, a gladiator’s quest for freedom, and the backdrop of the Celtic revolution. If you’re not familiar with what really happened to Pompeii, you might just think this is another gladiator flick with some epic explosions thrown in. But if you know your history, you’ll appreciate how the movie weaves in the real-life disaster with some fictional drama. And yes, the ending was totally predictable—nobody outruns a volcano!

All in all, Pompeii is a solid pick if you’re into gladiator movies with a touch of history. Even if that’s not typically your thing, it’s definitely worth a watch for the stunning visuals alone. The romance, the gladiatorial action, and the suspense leading up to the eruption all come together for an enjoyable ride. It’s not the most historically accurate film, but it’s a lot of fun, and you’ll find yourself hooked even if you’re just there for the chaos. So, whether you’re a fan of ancient history or just love a good disaster flick, Pompeii is definitely worth checking out.
