Rating: 4.5 out of 5.A whole new meaning to the phrase, “do it yourself.”
This movie will absolutely wreck your brain — in the best way possible.

We open with a mysterious figure descending into a basement, briefcase in hand, trying to disarm a bomb. Before anything makes sense, shots fire, shadows move, and the briefcase turns out to be more than just your average luggage — it’s a damn time machine.
The bomb explodes, the man’s face gets melted off (don’t worry, he’ll be fine… kinda) and someone else appears from the shadows to push the briefcase back to him.
What the hell is going on?
Welcome to Predestination.
Spoilers (This is legit the entire plot, summarized of course)
At the heart of Predestination is one character — Jane — who is literally every single important person in the entire movie.
Jane is abandoned as a baby on the steps of an orphanage. Jane grows up smart, athletic, and tough, but always feels… different. Later, Jane falls in love with a mysterious man, gets pregnant, and is left heartbroken when the guy straight-up vanishes without a word.
After giving birth, doctors discover Jane was born with both male and female reproductive organs — a rare medical condition. Complications during surgery leave Jane biologically male, with no choice but to live out the rest of life as a man.
Now meet Ethan Hawke’s character — a time-traveling agent tasked with stopping a terrorist known as the Fizzle Bomber. Ethan meets Jane (post-surgery, now going by John) at a bar and offers the chance to get revenge on the man who ruined their life.
Here’s where the brain-melting begins.
Ethan takes John back in time to the night she first fell in love… with the mysterious man.
Plot twist: John is the man.
John fell in love with herself — without ever knowing it — and got herself pregnant. The baby they have? That’s Jane — the same baby abandoned at the orphanage to start the whole cycle again.
If that wasn’t confusing enough, Ethan reveals he’s been unknowingly hunting the Fizzle Bomber for years… only to find out he is the Fizzle Bomber — a future version of himself driven mad by years of time travel.

So let’s recap:
Character | Also Is… |
---|---|
Jane | John (after surgery) |
John | The Mysterious Lover |
John | The Time Agent (Ethan Hawke) |
The Time Agent | The Fizzle Bomber |
The Baby | Jane (Restart the cycle) |
Every major character in this movie is the same person.
Jane → John → Ethan → Fizzle Bomber → Jane again.
