Stonehearst Asylum (2014)

This Time.. I'll Play Doctor

A Review

Read Time: 1 min read

Rating: 3 out of 5.

Psychological patients taking over the minds of the sane—while being fooled by other psychological patients.

The poster for this film unintentionally ruins the entire plot unfortunately.

I’ll admit, this wasn’t the best psychological thriller I’ve ever seen… until the ending.

If you’ve ever felt like you could be tricked, this movie tricks you twice—at the same time.

The ending baffled me because suddenly, everything that seemed confusing became clear. And yes, I know that makes zero sense in how I just worded it, but trust me—it will once you watch this film.

About halfway through, I started getting a bit drowsy. The pacing was slow, and the information just felt like it was being dragged out. The ending, however, didn’t just change my perspective—it completely redefined how I rated the movie overall.

Plot Summary

A man from Oxford ventures into an asylum in the middle of nowhere, only to discover that it’s been taken over by an unexpected force. What follows is a twisting, unpredictable journey of deception and psychological warfare.

And the ending? The ending twists more than you can imagine.

Throughout the film, we follow Dr. Newgate—a man who introduces himself, but never really gives us any backstory. And there’s a reason for that. One that’s brilliantly explained in the film.

This is where the movie truly shines—it keeps you questioning everything.

  • Dr. Salt (Michael Caine) – A solid character but underdeveloped. He briefly explains a major situation but then just fades into the background.
  • Silas Lamb (Ben Kingsley) – An incredible performance. Kingsley is a veteran of psychological thrillers, and it shows. He knows exactly how to manipulate an audience.
  • Eliza Graves (Kate Beckinsale) – Spectacular. Her character suffers from a disorder that I couldn’t quite pinpoint (and oddly enough, I couldn’t find much about it online), but it feels real. Beckinsale plays her with conviction and depth.

One thing that really started grating on my nerves was how obsessively Newgate kept trying to get Eliza Graves to run away with him. The same scene. The same answers. Again and again.

But then… the ending explained why.

And suddenly, it wasn’t annoying anymore—it was brilliant.

There is one line in this film that you will see coming from a mile away.

If you don’t, well…you probably haven’t watched enough cliché movies.

A small hint?
It starts with “Madly”.

If you enjoy psychology, mental institutions, and a good dose of mental inception, Stonehearst Asylum is definitely worth a watch.

Just be patient with the slow pacing—because the payoff is well worth it.

Hmm is anyone else encountering problems with
the images on this blog loading? I’m trying to find out if
its a problem on my end or if it’s the blog. Any responses
would be greatly appreciated.

Leanne

Hi there mates, how is all, and what you wish for to say on the topic of this piece of writing, in my view its really remarkable in favor of me.

I am really enjoying the theme/design of your website. Do
you ever run into any web browser compatibility problems? A handful of my blog readers have complained about my website not operating correctly in Explorer but looks
great in Chrome. Do you have any recommendations to help
fix this problem?

Hello! I know this is somewhat off-topic however I had
to ask. Does running a well-established website such as yours require
a large amount of work? I’m completely new to writing a blog
but I do write in my journal every day. I’d like
to start a blog so I will be able to share my own experience and views online.
Please let me know if you have any ideas or tips for brand new aspiring blog owners.
Thankyou!

hosting provider at a fair price? Many thanks, I appreciate it!

and wound up here Stonehearst Asylum | Movie Reviews.

And I do have a couple of questions for you if you usually do
not mind. Could it be just me or does it look like a few of these responses appear
like they are written by brain dead folks? 😛 And,
if you are posting on other online sites, I would like to keep up with everything fresh you
have to post. Could you make a list of every one of your social pages like your linkedin profile,
Facebook page or twitter feed?
