That Awkward Moment (2014)

Maturing A Fuckboy - The Movie

A Review

Read Time: 2 min read

Rating: 2.5 out of 5.

A funny little film about relationships—what you shouldn’t do, and ultimately, what you should.

This movie was great. It really was a mood-lifter. Even when bad things happened, you knew they’d somehow fix themselves, and that’s just how this film worked. It followed the classic storyline of three best friends chasing girls until, one by one, they realized that life is more than just casual hookups. It’s about finding someone you actually want to stay with afterward. A pretty blunt and unromantic moral, sure—but simple to understand. All guys want someone they can be around, someone they can talk to, laugh with, and find comfort in. This film shows a “somewhat” realistic version of how that’s possible.

I say somewhat realistic because, let’s be honest—no one actually acts like this in real life. If you do, congratulations, but I guarantee girls won’t always respond the same way. You can’t have a female friend who helps you pick up other girls and expect not to eventually fall for her. Being around someone long enough makes you more attracted to them with each interaction. This doesn’t just apply to romance—it’s also how friendships form.

A little psychological tangent here, so bear with me. Men make friends with other guys on a less emotionally attractive level (obviously, unless they’re homosexual). But on a subconscious level, there’s always something that draws one friend to another—whether it’s personality, interests, or just mutual respect. That’s what builds a solid friendship, like a brotherhood. This is exactly what you see with the three main guys in this film. Even with all the terrible advice they gave each other, they stuck together and always had each other’s backs.

Women, on the other hand—that’s a whole different conversation. And honestly, I’m not even going to get into it because (1) it’s complicated (who would’ve guessed?), and (2) unlike guys, women are far more unique in their emotional and social dynamics. There’s no “average” pattern.

Anyway, back to the movie.

The film isn’t about deep psychological dynamics, so don’t overthink it. It’s just about three guys having fun and realizing they need more than fun. They need more than just themselves and each other—they need to open up and let more people in. Because the bigger the crowd, the more fun… right?

It’s a pretty funny comedy starring the great and handsome (calm down, ladies) Zac Efron as Jason. To my surprise, he was actually decent in this role. Was he his usual self? Of course. Zac Efron basically plays Zac Efron in every movie—handsome, popular, gets what he wants. But hey, he wasn’t bad, so no hate.

  • Daniel (Miles Teller) – Great job. Funny, charismatic, and honestly one of the most entertaining characters in the movie (as you can even see in the credits).
  • Mikey (Michael B. Jordan) – The token responsible friend, and yeah, “the Black guy.” That pretty much sums up his role. Haven’t seen him in many other films, but he was solid, and the trio had good chemistry.
  • Ellie (Imogen Poots) – A great character overall. Funny, charming, sweet, cute, and somehow knows exactly how to handle Zac.
  • Chelsea (Mackenzie Davis) – The wingwoman-turned-love-interest. She and Daniel had great chemistry—definitely one of the best relationships in the film.
  • Vera (Jessica Lucas) – Not a major character (she’s the wife who cheats on Mikey), but she served her purpose—giving Mikey the wake-up call he needed.

Everyone else—nice job, keep up the good work.

If you enjoy laugh-out-loud moments, hilarious dialogue, amusing characters, and a messed-up love story, give this film a watch.
