Rating: 2.5 out of 5.This is ultimately the story of a little girl who just wanted a mother to love her.
The Ring (2002)
This horror film recreates the black-and-white thriller sensation that incorporated technology-based hauntings, similar to One Missed Call.
The first Ring movie primarily focuses on the backstory of Samara’s life before she was murdered. It sets you on a path of understanding her story because, after all, she wants to be heard. Soon after the Morgans adopt her from the orphanage, things start going wrong. The mother begins having visions, nightmares, strange sensations, and internal pains, while the father seems mostly unaffected by it all.

As both the mother and daughter start acting very strangely, the father agrees to have them admitted to a mental facility, where a psychologist analyzes Samara and records her on tape:
Psychologist: “You don’t want to hurt people.”
Samara: “But I do, and it won’t stop.”
(Not an exact quote from the movie, but you get the idea.)
This exchange basically tells you that Samara will never stop. No matter what you do or how you try to help, she’s bent on killing, and that’s the only thing she will do—until later when you learn why (The Ring 2).

The rest of the film dives into the process of uncovering Samara’s life and her tragic end, while also showing the viewer—though I didn’t fully understand this until the second film—that you must COPY the tape and show it to someone else before your seven days are up, or Samara will kill you. This is because Samara wants to be heard (it’s a video, but just go with it), and that’s how the curse spreads.
Samara only survived seven days inside the well, which is why you die in seven days.
The film ends with Aiden (the son) being saved because the mother copied the video (but didn’t show it to anyone else?).

By the way, if you don’t understand why it’s called The Ring, it’s because just before you die, you see a ring-shaped image (symbolizing the well). When Katie looks up from the well, you can see the ring—that’s what it represents.
The Ring 2 (2005)
In this sequel, a little girl named Samara was born as a result of a devil’s wish. Her mother, unable to have children, used a ritual to get her wish and give birth to a daughter. Soon after, she noticed something strange about the child: Samara never cried, and she was afraid of water. One day, Samara “told” her mother, “Kill me,” and the mother attempted to drown the baby in a small fountain, but she was stopped before she could finish the deed.

The plot is pretty much the same as the first film, except this time Samara wants Katie to be her mother.
Going back to Samara’s baby years before she was adopted by the Morgans, the film explains what happened to her and why she turned out the way she did (like her fear of water). It doesn’t fully make sense, but it ties into the well.

The film starts off a little slow and boring but picks up pace in the middle, although it does start to feel drawn out. It seems like they got their point across fairly early on, and there’s not much more to explain. By about 30 minutes into the film, you’ll understand everything and predict what’s going to happen, but it’s still fun to see how it all wraps up. The ending is a bit funny too.
